One of the things guests will start to see a lot more of around Cedar Point in 2019 is freshly made food items. The smells, the interactions with cooks, the whole experience is getting elevated to bring you better menu options throughout the park.
This year Hugo’s Italian Kitchen debuted on the site of the former Midway Market adjacent to the Raptor roller coaster.
Hugo’s features an open kitchen layout with an impressive pizza oven in the center. As the cooks make pizzas, they are placed onto the rotating pizza oven, where they cook in as fast as one minute!
Hugo’s is also making pasta, sandwiches, calzones, desserts, and stromboli in house, for an impressive lineup of Italian menu options. Guests with the Cedar Point dining plan are able to choose one entree and one side, giving you endless combinations of flavors.
We have now tried the meatball sub on a couple occasions, and this is one hearty meal!
A sub roll is served with approximately 3 larger meatballs that on their own are loaded with great herbs and flavor. The sandwich is coated in marinara sauce and topped with melted cheese. We also greatly appreciate that the sub is held together by a nice quality roll. The bread held the sandwich together nicely without getting “soggy” from the sauce and falling apart.
If you can not open your mouth wide, you may want to consider eating this sandwich with a fork and knife.
Guests also have the option of adding fried onions to the top of the sandwich as well as a garlic aioli, which give a slight little bit of crunch and added flavor. Though we are not quite sure the aioli goes well with the flavors, as it is not really needed.
Guests also get their choice of sides from Caesar Salad, Caprese Salad, Garlic Knots, Pasta Salad, House Salad or a White Bean Salad.
The sandwich is quite good, as are the sides. The one thing that tends to be hit or miss is how hot the sandwich is served. Seeing as they are made, then brought up front to serve to guests, they can often be served mildly warm. As the park messes around with optimizing operations, it might be better to have them made to order, but that comes with the potential of slowing down the line. The alternative would be for guests to know what they want when approaching the counter, ordering their food and quickly moving out. This ensures an active rotation of food in the window.
Fact Sheet
What: Meatball Sub
Where: Hugo’s Italian Kitchen (Cedar Point)
Calories:
Cost: $13.99
Dining Plan: Yes
Pros: Great size and flavors from the combination of meatballs, sauce and cheese. Love the various fresh sides.
Cons: Optional onion straws and aioli are subject to your tastes. While we have not had any issues, some guests have mentioned the sandwich was not hot by the time they got it, paid and then sat down to eat. Not sure much can be done about that if it is handed over hot and by the time you wait in line to pay, get your drink, etc.
