In researching an article for the Sandusky Register on the design firm closing that did the work for the Cedar Point Boardwalk renovation, we stumbled upon a previously unpublished concept plan for the area that was quite interesting.

This plan appears to be a very early iteration of the design for the area. The design firm, BDR Design Group, out of Cincinnati, Ohio, would have put together several layout plans to review with Cedar Point. The client would have than sat down and decided what worked for their goals, and if any changes were required to make the project fit within an overall budget.

We noticed some interesting design concepts that were laid out that were ultimately cut from the project.

Prior to this concept plan, the only thing we knew was cut from the concept plans that were released by Cedar Point was the Coke Freestyle stand that was supposed to be tucked between the Wild Mouse queue and Matterhorn.

So lets take a walk around the proposed concept plan that never was to see what was removed.

Between Windseeker and the Grand Pavilion looks to be a stage area with several smaller food or beverage stands and possibly a water feature.

Over by GateKeeper, it appears the entrance for the roller coaster was planning on being relocated closer to Troika and the old entry plaza was going to be used as some type of new feature.

The plan shows the removal of the Lakeside Express food stand, which is seldom open. In its place, a new basketball game would have been installed.

All new landscaping features were planned around the giant Ferris Wheel, including a covered queue.

Where the basketball game is currently located, it appears a new landscape garden was planned with a possible new entrance to the colosseum/arcade.

The plan called for the reuse of the former Roost/Mr. Potato stand adjacent to Planet Snoopy, which ultimately was removed.

Besides some other small details, it appears that a new stand alone restroom was planned between Atomic Scrambler and the WindSeeker. This might be the worst of the items to be removed as restrooms in the area are extremely limited with a small one inside the Grand Pavilion and then another over by GateKeeper.

Ultimately, the Boardwalk area we received was very well executed and brought an area of the park that was rather dead to life. Specifically during the summer event Boardwalk Nights, we have never seen such a great flutter of activity in the area.

Which of the early concept elements would you have liked to see incorporated in the Boardwalk area?
