Charred Corn and Chorizo Flatbread

We started off the Frontier Festival with the Charred Corn and Chorizo Flatbread. A serving consists of two slices approximately 3″x6″. We can not say it enough, this flatbread was outstanding! The sweet corned really paired well with the spicy chorizo and jalapenos. Overall we would not hesitate to get his menu option again, as the portion size was nice and really tasty as long as guests do not mind some spice.

Next was one of our most anticipated menu items, the corn cheesecake square. Served on a traditional graham cracker bottom, with corn kernels embedded into the cheesecake and a flaky crust topping, topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce. The cheesecake was served cold, which is our own personal preference. The corn offered a really interesting chewy texture to the dessert. If we had one recommendation, it is to actually hold off eating it right away and let it come up to room temperature, at least a little. The cheesecake was almost too cold, making it difficult to get the plastic utensils into and rather than having a traditional creamy texture, was close to a frozen consistency.

Our other big complaint about the cheesecake is the portion size relative to other menu options. We get it that guests are only spending roughly $6/menu item; however, this was not a consistent portion size when you look at other options during the festival. This is however a consistent complaint about Cedar Point’s food festivals going back for years. For some reason they seem so adverse and stingy when it comes to dessert options. The cheesecake though is a legitimate serving size complaint and something we sadly would not get again despite being our most anticipated option.

230525 Cedar Point Frontier Festival Jalapeno Creamed Corn Empanada
Jalapeno Creamed Corn Empanada

The Jalapeno Creamed Corn Empanada are served warm and topped with a light salsa and cotija cheese. We were curious how these would be executed considering creamed corn typically is very runny. However, this has been reduced to a nice, thicker gravy like consistency. However, this leads into we were not impressed with the empanada.

We get that a creamed corn in any format requires a hearty crust to maintain shape and consistency while frying. However, we were not a fan of the outside dough, as it seemed like a little too much.

In addition, most of the flavor came from the salsa. The empanada and corn filling was rather bland and did not do much for us.

Maybe it is just that we were spoiled during the food truck war days at Cedar Point where there were some really excellent empanadas that really set the standard for us.

230525 Cedar Point Frontier Festival Corn Pierogi
Corn Pierogi

Lets get into the pierogi. These delectable little pockets of deliciousness can be all over the place when it comes to their filling and how they are prepared. So we had no idea what to fully expect here. Even when we got them and saw the toasty little tops, we began to worry because it often means the dough has become dried out.

However, the Frontier Festival Red Bliss Potato Pierogi were nicely prepared. What was all the better was we saw they were made by Ohio City Pasta, who have become a regional expert on pierogi. Did you know many people outside of this region do not even know what a pierogi is?

These little pockets are filled with mashed potatoes and nicely cooked. While the pierogi was good on its own, where it really shined, and went with the festival was the bacon-corn topping on the side. Really nicely prepared, and when added to the pierogi, was an outstanding option. Served with 2 pierogi per order, it was the exact serving size we expected for the price point.

230525 Cedar Point Frontier Festival Elote Sweet Corn Quesadilla
Elote Sweet Corn Quesadilla

A quesadilla, while decent, is not always our first choice as a menu option. However, the Cedar Point 230525 Cedar Point Elote Sweet Corn Quesadilla far exceeded expectations. Like really good. A serving came as two large slices. Each packed full of corn and other ingredients, and served with drizzle of sour cream. The flavors were really well done, serving size ample, and they did not skimp on the internal components that added a really nice cheesy flavor and consistency. We could not get enough of this menu option.

230525 Cedar Point Frontier Festival Corn Ice Cream
Corn Ice Cream

After a nice evening of sampling, we round out the event with the Corn Ice Cream with Butterscotch and Caramel Corn Topping. This was the most popular of the menu items served at Fountain & Floats. It was a plain vanilla ice cream with corn kernels embedded into the mix.

The idea of corn in a frozen ice cream had us initially concerned; however, the chefs had excellently prepared it where the corn provided a nice chewy texture that again paired really nice with the butterscotch salt and caramel corn topping. Serving size was about what we expected, one scoop of ice cream. The caramel corn you could tell was fresh, especially given they are freshly making it right outside. We devoured every last drop and loved every moment of it.

We will be back on another visit to try some of the other items. We encourage you to venture maybe outside of your comfort zone and try what the chefs have prepared. The corn flavor is never overpowering and provides a really nice accompaniment to all of the options.
