Cedar Point has announced that the Frontier Festival will return in 2021, running weekends May 14-16 & 21-23, then daily May 28 through June 13. The focus this year will be on menu options structured around a stockpile of cherries. Frontier Festival will pair cherries into more than 20 menu options, plus offer more than 100 craft brews, seltzers and custom cocktails, similar to previous year Brew & BBQ style events.
Tasting Cards will be $30 and good for 12 tickets. Tickets are good for food, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. The good news is that for the first time, Cedar Point is allowing unused tickets to be used towards future visits. Dining plans will not work towards Frontier Festival menu items.
OFFER EXPIRED: Cedar Point offered Tasting cards for only $15 for passholders when purchased May 10 or 11. Tastings cards are good for any day during the event.
2021 Cedar Point Frontier Festival Menu
Chuck Wagon Shed
– Barbacoa Nachos (2 tickets)
These nachos seem to be the one menu item from each years Brew & BBQ/Frontier Festival that just will not go away. We have never been a big fan of this menu option since they first appeared years ago, and still nothing changes much to sway that opinion.
Stockyard BBQ Shed
– Whole Hog Sliders (1 ticket) – Cherry Mojo and Fire & Ice Pickles
– Smoked Sausage Sliders (1 ticket) – Cherry Bourbon BBQ Sauce & Cole Slaw
If you stick around on the midway outside of this booth, guests will also see the whole hogs being slow smoked right on-site. The tender meat is served on a nice hearty slider bun (great quality bread!). The meat is then topped with creamy slaw, bbq sauce and fire & ice pickles. These little sliders provide a great flavor combination and well worth the cost at only one ticket.
Once again, this all new sausage slider did not disappoint. The meat offered a nice spiciness that paired well with the slaw and bbq sauce.
Miss Keats
– Smok’n Cherry Wings (3 tickets)
– Walkin’ Chicken Salad (3 tickets) – Cherry Vanilla Vinaigrette
– Cherry Bombs (3 tickets) – Cheesecake filled
– Cluck Cluck Nuggets (2 tickets) – Breaded bite size chicken chunks with a side of tangy BBQ dippin’ sauce or cherry ketchup served with Gooey Gold Mac ‘n’ Cheese
– Git Along Lil Doggies (2 tickets) – Mini hot dogs with a side of Gooey Gold Mac ‘n’ Cheese
– Gooey Gold Mac ‘n’ Cheese (1 ticket)
Smok’n Cherry Wings were fine. They were however baked and not smoked. In addition, the cherry pie filling sauce was an odd sauce pairing given they were serving cherry bbq sauce at Miss Keats.
These bread cones have been offered at some of the sister Cedar Fair parks in the past and we were really excited to see them make a debut at Cedar Point. This menu option was quite the surprise for us, but it needed some tweaking. We had expected the chicken salad to be more of a chunked chicken with a mayonnaise base, stuffed into the cone. However, it is served as a romaine based chopped lettuce with very little in the way of actual fried chicken tender pieces, a little bit of shredded Parmesan cheese, and was not pre-dressed. However, we asked for the cherry dressing that was served in a side cup and poured it over the bread cone. This proved to be a fantastic idea as the bread soaked up the dressing nicely and it went really well with the salad.
The Cherry Bombs tended to have mixed reviews from guests, which seemed to stem from how much or too little they were fried. The cherry cheesecake filling was breaded and fried, creating a nice golden touch. We happen to get lucky on our particular visit and get one of the last servings of the day. We were quite impressed with the cherry bombs that had a nice flavor and offered a nice sweet taste for the day.
We opted to skip the nuggets, hot dogs and mac & cheese because they were more standard fare and nothing to particularly special for the festival. More of an option for the picky eaters.
Fountains and Floats
– Warm Cherry Cobbler (2 tickets) – Topped with Soft Serve Ice Cream
– Cherry Crazy Shake (2 tickets)
– Cherry Coke Float (2 tickets) – Cherry Pie Filling Mixed w/Ice Cream Served with Coca Cola
We opted to pass on the cobbler due to its small portion and not looking like anything too special beyond the norm.
The float and the shake we opted to have several visits and besides the long waits since they are all made to order, both were quite good and a great value during the festival.
Sagebrush Sue’s
– Deep Fried Cherry Cheesecake Chimichanga (3 tickets)
– Pepper Jack Cheese w/Cherry Dippin’ Sauce (3 tickets)
We easily heard over and over again that the Cherry Cheesecake Chimichanga was the highlight of the festival. We have to agree, while everything was exceptionally good this year, the Cherry Cheesecake Chimichanga was really good. Perfectly cooked with nice flakey shell and paired nice with topped cherry pie filling. We had several of these throughout the festival.
One of our favorite pairings is hot and sweet, so this twist on the classic cheese on a stick had us excited. However, possibly because the batter was too thick, our cheese was far from melty and gooey. The sauce paired nice with the pepper cheese to give the sweet/hot combo. The treat needs some tweaking to make sure the end product is to the desired consistency. We saw several of these throughout the festival and they all appeared to have the same issue.
Round Up
– Cherry Buffalo Chicken Tenders (2 tickets)
– Deep Fried Ribs (2 tickets) – Bourbon Cherry Sauce
– Cowboy Caviar (2 tickets) – Cherry “Chickpea” Salad
In house breaded chicken tenders were served with a cherry buffalo sauce that worked really well together. Excellent flavor and unique twist.
The deep fried ribs were definitely the unique surprise of the entire festival. The prepared ribs were dipped in breaded and fried to golden brown, and then drizzled with a bourbon cherry bbq sauce. The meat was fall off the bone tender, which we think was the ideal way to serve these ribs. The crunchy breading was a nice surprise and light sauce all worked really well together.
We were happy to see a vegetarian option available during this year Frontier Festival. This was a light refreshing salad option; however, it lacked any cherry flavoring or much flavor at all. Maybe we got a light batch, but this option was rather disappointing.
Philly Cart
– Buckaroo Chicken On A Stick (3 tickets) – Sweet Cherry Herbed Sauce
– Do-Si Do Cherry Philly ‘Wich (3 tickets)
Cluck Cluck Shed
– Cherry Rubbed Pork Taco (2 ticket) – Small flour tortilla w/jalapeno, cherry slaw, queso fresco
– Nashville Cuban Sandwich (3 tickets)
– Grilled Cherry Bread Pudding w/Cherry Sauce (1 tickets)
The pork taco was probably one of our favorite menu items of the entire festival. A flour shell is piled high with some nice shredded pork and went really well with the slaw, pickled jalapenos and cheese. While this menu option was terrific, we wonder how it would be on a bao bun (though they would have to be tested for how they hold up in this festival environment?
The Cuban was a unique take on the famous Miami sandwich, but lacked much of any significant cherry tie-in.
Cherry bread pudding was a nice treat and warmed on the flat top grills adjacent to the stand. Our only disappointment was it was maybe two bites and thought they could have easily offered about twice as much bread.
Smokehouse Shed
– Smoked Brisket Slider (1 ticket) – Cherry Bourbon BBQ Sauce
– Smoked Turkey Legs (3 tickets) – Dipped in Cherry Glaze
When most people think of brisket, they think of the tender thin slices like served at Back Beat Que. When it is served chopped, a true BBQ aficionado would say it is over cooked. However, we were quite happy to see the park move away from the sliced version the past could years and see them serve it chopped in slider form. It worked well with this presentation.
In am amusement park, the smoked turkey leg holds it own. This version offers a slight dredge before being served to the guest and offered a slight cherry zing.
Wagon Wheel
– Very Cherry Streusel Pizza (2 tickets)
– Sweet Cherry Chicken Pizza (2 tickets)
– Cherry Cauliflower Pizza (2 tickets) – Cherry goat cheese
This is the first Cedar Point festival that we recall the pizza finally being worth a try. All three options offered a very unique flavor profile that was really well. The cherry chicken pizza was the most surprising, offering a really well done cheese flavor that really worked well together. In addition, the cherry streusel offered a perfected prepared crunchy topping that was everything we expected. Well done!
